Jen Brister and Clare Warde are a funny, touching double act. Set in the "front line" of a radiology department – a kind of everydesk – these receptionists pass the time mimicking their co-workers and irritating each other. The situation escalates when they inexplicably become trapped in the office, prompting them to find new ways to pass the time and explore some home truths about each other and themselves.

This comic duo has a rapport that appears lovingly genuine, and despite some slapstick hitches, Reception runs smoothly, segueing between light-hearted banter, interior monologue and reverie. Jen and Clare struggle with ambition, love and being female, and while there is the odd groaner, there’s no doubt that it’s all in the best possible spirit.

It’s refreshing to see female comedy that doesn’t rely on vulgarity and instead deals with traditionally feminine-funny-issues such as ageing, makeup and the fear of becoming a spinster (with cats) with grace and style. It’s also surprisingly uplifting to witness the achievement of female orgasm compared with the construction of an intricate model of the Eiffel Tower.

This is not a show just for women, however. With some polishing this act could go far and develop into an engaging treatment on the hopes, dreams and constant fears of mediocrity that resonate with all of us. For now, it remains a pleasant hour of playful mockery.
